Guitar Lessons in the South West London area

Thanks for showing an interest in private guitar tuition! I offer lessons for guitarists within the South West London area and teach all ages from primary school age upwards (CRB checked – please ask to see this if required). The style of learning is completely up to you – many of my pupils choose the rock/pop route, but classical, folk, blues styles can be accommodated for.

I have a number of years experience teaching on an individual or small group basis, and I have pupils right across the age range – I think my youngest right now is 6 and my eldest is, in her own words, “a groovy granny”. Some people come to me who are just starting out – when you first get a guitar it can be quite daunting, and it is often best to get advice right from the start about how to get going using the proper techniques. Some others come along who have been playing a reasonably long time, but want help in overcoming a particular aspect of playing that they are finding difficult, or want to try something new that they would not have done on their own.

I also run music workshops for larger groups, one of which is a youth project in Wimbledon called ‘Music Room’. Here young people can turn up in groups, having a go at an instrument, getting basic tuition and learning how to play together. In June 2009, I took over the running of the project, which is incredibly exciting as we have recently been able to make changes to the building to put on large-scale under-18 gigs and form a recording studio.

Goals, Grades & that sense of achievement…

Whilst most of my pupils choose not to do grades, I can enter you in for these if you wish. The sense of achievement that obtaining grades gives you is a good motivation to keep going, which is why I am involved with a group called InsideOut who are developing their own program of set goals to achieve – whether this is writing, recording or performing! InsideOut tuition is very much about the wholistic teaching approach!

The program is called ‘TNT’ – ‘tracks not tests’. It is a way of learning that places far more importance on the enjoyment through performance of songs than examinations through the grades system. The program gives you the option of what you want to achieve – whether this is pure guitar technique, songwriting development or live performance. It also involves the opportunity to record what you have learnt at our studio during one of the lessons, where you can take a CD away with you.

The cost of a lesson is £30 an hour (within South West London region – contact me to check). The alternative is a £25 an hour lesson if you are willing to come to me – I am based in Motspur Park, SW London – a 25 minute train from Waterloo (but 60 second walk from the station).
